A neighbour may not realise how sound carries into your home. When a conversation feels safe and appropriate, a specific request can be a useful first step. Avoid assuming that a disturbance was intended to disregard you.
Choose a calm moment
If possible, speak when neither of you is in the middle of a party, argument, or hurried departure. Describe what you heard and when, rather than labelling the person inconsiderate.
The music was quite clear in our bedroom after eleven last night. Could you turn the bass down later in the evening?
This gives them something concrete to change. “You’re always noisy” invites a disagreement about the word “always.”
Ask for a workable adjustment
Explain the practical effect and listen to any relevant circumstances. You may find that moving a speaker or agreeing a quieter period helps more than a general demand for silence.
If you are planning a gathering yourself, advance notice can be considerate, but it is not permission for unlimited disruption. Make it easy for a neighbour to contact you about a problem.
If the problem continues
Keep a factual record of the disturbance and use the appropriate building or local reporting process if necessary. Check applicable rules rather than assuming a universal quiet hour. Do not retaliate with noise or publish accusations in a neighbourhood group.
If direct contact feels unsafe, use a suitable intermediary instead. A courteous approach need not involve a confrontation at someone’s door.
