How to Be an Easy Overnight Guest
A spare room is someone else’s home, even when they make it feel like yours.
Ask Alexander
Are you staying with someone soon? A few small arrangements can make the visit easier for everyone.
An overnight visit works best when the welcome and the practical arrangements are both clear. Affection does not automatically settle arrival times, transport, meals, or how long the visit lasts.
Agree the shape of the stay
Confirm your arrival and departure dates before booking travel. Ask about the household’s schedule and how you will get there. Do not assume that a bed includes airport transfers or an itinerary.
Would Friday evening to Sunday morning work for you? I can arrange my own transport from the station.
Mention needs that affect the stay beforehand. Ask before bringing another person or a pet, even if the host knows them well.
Fit into the household
Notice sleeping hours, shared bathrooms, workspace, and household routines. Ask where to put things rather than opening cupboards in search of a more convenient system. Offer practical help, then accept the host’s answer.
Plan some independent time if the visit is longer than a brief weekend. Your host may enjoy your company and still need to work, rest, or take care of ordinary tasks. “Make yourself at home” need not mean “keep me company every minute.”
Leave the room thoughtfully
Ask what the host would like done with bedding and towels; preferences differ. Remove rubbish, gather your belongings, and leave shared spaces tidy. Thank them specifically, and send a message once you are home.
If you have broken or damaged something, mention it before leaving and discuss a repair or replacement.
Alexander’s advice
The easiest guest to welcome again is the one who notices that a generous host still has a life to lead.
