Small Talk That Leads Somewhere

Begin with curiosity, not a search for the perfect opening line.

Ask Alexander

Would you like an easier way to begin a conversation with someone you’ve just met?

Small talk can be a modest act of welcome. You are finding out whether two people have something they would enjoy discussing, not proving that you are the most interesting person in the room.

Start with what you share

The occasion, a mutual interest, or the immediate setting can provide an easy opening. Ask a question that leaves the other person choices about how much to reveal.

How do you know our host?

Have you been to one of these before?

Listen to the answer before planning the next question. A detail about a garden, journey, or book often gives you somewhere more natural to go than another item from a mental list.

Offer something of yourself

Question after question can feel like an interview. Contribute a short observation or experience, then leave room for theirs. You need not match every story with a more dramatic one.

If work comes up, follow the person’s level of interest. A profession may be central to someone’s life, or the very thing they hoped to stop discussing for the evening. A gentle change of subject is perfectly acceptable.

Notice when to move on

Brief answers may mean someone is shy, distracted, tired, or ready to leave; you cannot reliably know which. Give them an easy exit instead of increasing the pressure.

It was lovely meeting you. I’ll let you catch up with the others.

A pleasant five-minute exchange does not need to become a lasting friendship to have been worthwhile.

Alexander’s advice

Your task is to make a little room for another person. Interesting conversation often begins there.
